Born in Los Angeles, CA, I attended Crescent Heights Blvd. Elementary School, Louis Pasteur Jr. High School, and Alexander Hamilton High School, graduating from the latter in June 1962. After college, I began my career as an instructor of biological sciences at Citrus College in Glendora, CA in September 1970. Prior to joining the Citrus staff, my work experience included: University of California, Davis, as a field entomologist; a volunteer field assistant at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Gothic, Colorado; research assistant (rearing lab, museum curatorial duties, greenhouse/virus vectors) at the University of California, Berkeley); general biology student instructor at West Los Angeles College.

My professional degrees: B.S. (1966) – Entomology (University of California, Davis); M.S. (1967) – Entomology (University of California, Berkeley).

My areas of instruction between 1970 and 1998 included general biology, zoology, entomology, physical anthropology, human ecology, and human anatomy. Instruction in recent years has been devoted to the teaching of a course for non-majors called Contemporary Topics in Biology, a course that includes the legal, ethical and moral issues in our society as a result of our increasing knowledge within the biological sciences (e.g., gene therapy, stem cell research, genetically-modified foods, global warming, environmental pollution, and human population ecology).

Besides teaching, my life has been devoted largely to travel and writing. I have published articles in entomology and college entomology instruction. My specialty in entomology remains the biology and systematics of insects, especially selected groups of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera).

My professional organization memberships include the California Teachers Association/National Education Association, Lepidoptera Research Foundation, Lepidopterists’ Society, and the Lorquin Entomological Society (Los Angeles, CA). I have received honors and awards from the Boy Scouts of America –Eagle Scout Award (1960), Marquis’ Who’s Who in the West (1976), Golden Apple Award – Citrus College (1978), and distance running awards (by age group) – 5K, 10K, 15K (1988-1992).

I also belong to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles and some of my research and publications have been in the field of genealogy.

Extensive travels, with particular interest in insular, high latitude and high altitude localities, include: United States and much of Canada and Mexico; much of Central and South America, the Caribbean, western and eastern Europe, Middle East (Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Iran), north and east Africa, parts of India and Nepal, Australia and New Zealand.

In my spare time, I enjoy many activities along with my wife and daughter, hobbies that still include reading periodicals, writing, genealogy, hiking and distance running, photography, landscaping and gardening, collecting stamps and antiquarian postcards related to my family history.

Upon retirement, more time will be devoted to my dear wife, Tatyana (Tanya), from Petrozavodsk, Russia, and daughter, Yekaterina (Kate).
